What is the Population of Rome?

Written by: Kate Zusmann

what is the population of Rome

As of February 1, 2026, the most reliable “current” population figure for Rome is the latest official resident total available in the annual series. The most recent published count for Roma Capitale is 2,746,984 residents (as of January 1, 2025). If you include the wider Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, the total is 4,223,885 (2025). More recent municipal totals are typically released later, so these remain the benchmark figures at the start of 2026.

Year (as of Jan 1) Rome (Roma Capitale) Metropolitan City of Rome Capital
2021 2,770,226 4,231,451
2022 2,749,031 4,216,874
2023 2,755,309 4,227,059
2024 2,751,747 4,225,409
2025 2,746,984 4,223,885

The population density within Rome’s city limits is about 2,134 residents per square kilometer (based on the 2025 resident total and the city’s official area).

Rome also remains a major destination for newcomers. As of January 1, 2025, about 354,086 residents—roughly 12.9% of the city’s population—held foreign citizenship.

Data note: These figures refer to the resident population in official demographic statistics (not daily “present” population, which fluctuates with commuters and visitors).
